Congress Passes Bill to Release Jeffrey Epstein Documents

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will require the publication of official records concerning the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a almost unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a change of position by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House gave in after an extended period of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.

Unanimous Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, speeding up the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Let the truth come out. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

The measure next will be sent to Trump for his approval. Trump indicated on Monday that he would sign the measure.

Even though the president has for an extended period rejected the uproar over the official management of the scandal as a “political stunt”, he expressed his backing for the measure over the weekend, and said he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Response

Democrats, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were seated in a House gallery, broke into applause after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from a GOP representative, who stated he worried the measure would disclose personal information of witnesses, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
